Glacier Kings Look for Payback on the Road at Oceanside

The Comox Valley Glacier Kings visit the Oceanside Generals tonight at Oceanside Place, four days after a hard-luck 1-0 loss to the Generals at home. Oceanside controlled the shot clock all night, out-shooting Comox Valley 18-2 in the first period alone and 44-25 overall, but could only solve Anthony Ganoung once. Ganoung made 43 saves on 44 shots and was named the game’s second star despite the loss. Donato Padula stopped all 25 shots he faced for the shutout win.

The result dropped the Kings to 2-4-0-0, 4 points, last in the North Division and ninth overall. Oceanside improved to 4-2-0-0, 8 points, tied for fourth overall and second in the North on the tiebreaker. The Generals have won four straight after dropping their first two games of the season.

Kings Add Two Up Front

Comox Valley made a move this week, acquiring forwards Suhaan Nagra and Owen Downey from the Kelowna Chiefs of the WIJHL for future considerations. Nagra, a 2008-born forward from Richmond, BC, returns to the Kings after starting the season with the Winnipeg Monarchs of the MJHL. Downey, a 2007-born forward from Toronto, joins the Kings after totaling 12 points (6G, 6A) in 35 games for Kelowna last season. Both are expected to be in the lineup tonight.

Strength on Strength

This one pits the league’s best power play against its best penalty kill. Comox Valley leads the VIJHL at 29.2 percent with the man advantage, while Oceanside’s penalty kill sits atop the league at 91.3 percent, having allowed just two goals against on 23 chances all season. Whichever unit wins that battle could decide the game.

Oceanside isn’t just strong killing penalties, its own power play has been effective too, sitting at 21.7 percent, tied for seventh in the league. Comox Valley’s penalty kill, meanwhile, ranks second overall at 86.4 percent. Both special teams units have real numbers to lean on tonight.

In Net

Ander Reyes gets the start for the Kings. No starter has been confirmed for Oceanside, though Donato Padula has been their workhorse in net.

Looking Ahead

These two teams have now played twice in five days. After tonight, they don’t meet again until November 22 in Oceanside, followed by January 16 in Courtenay and February 27 in Oceanside.
