Ramos-Gadbois Stands Tall as Wolves Edge Glacier Kings 2-1
The Comox Valley Glacier Kings spent the final forty minutes of Saturday night pushing, and for most of it they looked like the better team. The scoreboard never caught up. Westshore Wolves goaltender Mathias Ramos-Gadbois turned aside 38 of 39 shots, and two goals through the first two periods held up as Westshore took a 2-1 decision.
The first period belonged to the Wolves. Westshore came out flying and outshot the Glacier Kings 20-7 over the opening twenty minutes, and Ander Reyes was busy from the start. He kept it scoreless until 12:20, when Trace Anderson finished a play set up by Shane Fillinger for his sixth of the season and a 1-0 Westshore lead.
The Glacier Kings came out of the intermission with a different look, firing 17 shots in the middle frame, but the Wolves added to their lead first. Noah Gebicki made it 2-0 at 6:53 with his third, assisted by Samuel Wong. Comox Valley had two chances to answer on the power play in the period, including four minutes after Alejandro Snead was called for a slew-footing double minor at 8:13, but Ramos-Gadbois and the Westshore penalty kill held firm.
The Glacier Kings finally broke through at 6:12 of the third. Owen Downey scored his first of the season, with Maxim Lefebvre and Suhaan Nagra each picking up their first assists, to cut the lead to 2-1 and set up a tense final stretch.
Comox Valley kept the pressure on, but a hooking call on Landen May at 15:50 sent the Wolves to the power play and cost the Glacier Kings valuable time. Reyes headed to the bench for an extra attacker with just over a minute left, and despite a push in the closing seconds, the equalizer never came.
Over the final two periods, the Glacier Kings outshot Westshore 32-27. Neither team scored on the power play, with both going 0 for 2.
Reyes finished with 45 saves on 47 shots in a performance that deserved a better result. Ramos-Gadbois was named first star, Anderson took second, and Downey earned third star honours for Comox Valley.
Kings back at it mid week against the Port Alberni Bombers at the Alberni Sports Complex.
